My Role
Lead UX Designer and Researcher for PillUp
Problem
Medical non-adherence is a rising concern in the United States, and people need a system where they can be easily reminded to take their medication on time.
Goal
Design an app that makes it easy for users to set medication reminders. Create something that also incentivizes users to complete tasks.
User Research
I conducted a usability test and interviews to test whether users found it helpful to utilize an app that would set reminders for medications for them. Research also found that users appreciated the “track your progress” and “rewards” section of the app because it would incentivize them to set reminders on the app more often. Research also revealed that users wanted the most simple method to add medication, and wanted to spend as less time on the app as possible.
User Interview
100% of interviewees agreed that a reward system would incentivize them to track their medication more effectively.
How often do you forget to take your medication?
What is the main hindrance to your medical adherence?
how would you be incentivized to take your medication on time?
how do you prefer to track your medication?
how difficult do you find current medication reminder apps to use?
Do you currently use a medication reminder app?
Competitive Analysis
Competitors did not have the variety of features that PillUp offers. While some competitors had rewards programs and coupons, no real competitor included “progress goals”.
User Persona
A persona, in user-centered design and marketing is a fictional character created to represent a user type that might use a site, brand, or product in a similar way
Mahmood
Age : 50
Status : Married
Occupation : Buiness
Location : United Kingdom
User Story
Mahmood is a 68 year old business owner who suffers from diabetes who needs an app that can easily track his medications because he often forgets to take his medication.
Goals
Receive a reminder to take medication
Track medication taken throughout the week
Receive incentives to take medicine
Frustrations
I always forget to take my medicine.
All the websites and apps are so difficult to use; they require an account to save info.
Lo-fi Wireframe
Paper Wireframes
I created multiple iterations of the home page to gather as many ideas as I could.
My goal was to keep the home page neat and to include all of the features on the home page. I took a piece of each iteration and utilized it on my final mockup.

Usability Testing
A usability test was performed to analyze how users interacted with the design after the high fidelity prototype was created. Based on the results of the usability test, I made interations on the mockups to account for the problems users experienced.
Usability Study
Study Type : Unmoderated usability study
Location : USA, remote
Participants : 5 Participants
Length : 15-20 minutes
Usability Study Findings
Medication Addition : People want easy access to adding their medication in a consistent and quick manner
Account Creation : Since users for this app are targeted to older people, users prefer to not create an account and just have their info saved automatically.
Time : People felt that it took too much time to add multiple medications at once.
Visual Design
Easy Navigation and ability to Save your info
In the final mockups, I added a larger “next” button and a “back” button to ease navigation and flow for the app. In addition, it was important that users understood the start date for their medication, so it appears in the final mockup as well.
